Who Is a Birth Center Right For?

Birth centers are designed for low-risk pregnancies: single baby, head-down position, 37–42 weeks gestation, no serious medical complications. Research consistently shows that for this population, birth center outcomes are equivalent to hospital outcomes for mother and baby — with significantly lower rates of intervention.

If you have a high-risk pregnancy (twins, preeclampsia, placenta previa, preterm labor history, etc.), a hospital birth is the appropriate choice. A good midwife will tell you this clearly and help you transfer care if needed.
